The Area Review process aims to target efficiencies whilst maintaining, or even improving, provision. Whatever the motivations of those who devised the process, it is clear that, post-Area Review, each college must look to generate savings, and, in particular, target ‘overheads’ – thereby protecting the quality of front-line teaching and the overall student experience.

Yet, after the quality of teaching provision, the quality of the physical environment is the second most influential factor affecting the student experience.
